Sand Residence and Offices
(# 1067)
Images Description Credits
This project involved recycling on a grand scale. A three story dilapidated 1940 warehouse which was scheduled to be torn down by the previous owner was completely rehabilitated into a contemporary urban dwelling, office and machine shop.   As old surfaces were salvaged and new elements were brought in.  Independent thinking was applied to each aspect of the space from the doors that become sculptural metalwork, to the break in scale of typical elements, to numerous atypical details and lighting throughout.
Both the residence and the office present a blend of preservation and the reinterpreted new elements.  A careful choice of materials and detail bring the two eras together into a cohesive atmospheric experience.  The steel fabricated elements, although unusual in detail are sympathetic with their lightness and grace to the ironwork of the original refurbished steel sash windows and the industrial nature of the building.
