| A non-profit foundation dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the world’s waves and beaches, was in search of an affordable new home.
A 1980’s tilt-up industrial building in San Clemente fit their budget but unfortunately not their profile of an open and environmentally responsible space. With a limited budget of $50.00 SF and a short schedule, the 7,000 SF space was cleared and the potential of an open plan became evident. Water and surfing metaphors are used to define and organize the spaces. Demonstrating their commitment to the environment the project received LEED CI Gold certification within a space 47% better than Title 24. A simple mixed-mode system promotes natural ventilation and further demonstrates their commitment to the environment.
Simple, off the shelf materials from local hardware stores were selected and used in an extraordinary way resulting in a unique environment which defined the nature of the Foundation.
