| The $18.2 million and 27,000 sf Satellite Service Kitchen is located in Norwalk, CA as part of the Metropolitan State Hospital campus. The new facility expands the capacity of the six kitchens existing on campus to meet the daily needs of over 1,000 patients. The building houses a full-service kitchen and offices for the administrative staff. Food supplies and finished meals are delivered through a service yard. All aspects of the building are designed to maximize operating efficiency while improving staff comfort.
The kitchen produces a large volume of meals daily, a rapid and voluminous operation, which puts a great demand on the architecture and its systems. The building materials selected lend themselves to sensible and stout construction, and were arranged into distinct volumes to organize the facades and illustrate the hierarchy of functions. The building systems and architecture achieved LEED® Gold Certification.
