This home is located in a small scale post-war tract in Santa Barbara. The area is undergoing rapid change due to its close proximity to the ocean.
The client, an actor, desired a retreat to "strum his guitar on the roof while looking at the sunset" and "tuck his surfboard under his arm and head to the beach."
The approach addressed the neighborhood compatibility by situating the garage at the rear of the property and keeping a portion of the original structure. A deck was integrated into the roof to screen the foreground homes; but an ocean view was captured through a slot between adjacent houses. |
