A non-traditional workplace, this office headquarters supports a Spanish language advertising company’s unique culture. Located adjacent to the pier in Huntington Beach, the project incorporates elements of the robust surrounding culture into its design.
The office’s vibrant colors aesthetically engage with the adjacent beach life, and a gymnasium, key to the initial programming of the space, caters to local youth sport leagues, bringing the community into this highly creative environment. The design utilizes much of the existing structure as an opportunity. An amphitheater-stairway creates a transition between departments while providing a collaboration meeting and event space, the existing ticket booth was transformed into a juice bar, and mezzanine level conference rooms hover over the open floor plan below.
These protruding chambers double as billboards; when their louvered facades are pulled shut, the emblazoned word ‘ocupado’ is formed to affirm the room’s use. Over 300 white sunbrellas that allude to the reflective umbrellas of photography studios are repurposed to brighten the space and conceal fire protection. The resulting space resourcefully dials into a contextual economy of means.
The broad programming and refreshing design thus cultivate an environment that feels as much like a community hub as it does a workplace.
