Evanston Court is a residential development in central Pasadena, California. The project combines the historic National Register Evanston Inn with new construction. The design includes the rehabilitation of the inn structure divided into 10 units; the construction of three new structures totaling 14 units; and a garage built beneath the site. The context is a medium density residential neighborhood in Pasadena’s City of Gardens zone, which requires compatibility with neighborhood character and prescribes courtyard guidelines. There was additional oversight from the city architectural review board and historic preservation advocates.
Design features:
• Architectural form characterized by simple massing and roofs to avoid competition with the complex Victorian design of the inn.
• Simplified traditional details in the porches, rafter tails, eaves, horizontal divisions, siding, and window surrounds.
• A courtyard scaled to the surrounding structures that is viewable from the street.
