The San Jose State University Spartan Complex Seismic Upgrade Project was the full renovation of 4 existing university buildings, completed over two phases. The project upgraded and modernized all building systems – seismic; full accessibility; fire life safety systems; energy management systems; and full sprinkler systems. The existing buildings are cast-in-place concrete structures, originally custom for specific programs, which limited the options for renovation and modification. The scope was to integrate four disparate departments from three colleges into the building complex to contribute to the development of new programs and pedagogy for the university. The goals were to meet new programmatic requirements; provide new open spaces for the students; provide clarity to the maze of circulation and separated spaces; and to extend the life of the complex. The renovated buildings establish the next stage of the complex’s direction and usefulness to the university community.
