| The Scanner is designed to critically address issues of informal development, preservation, and the compatibility of informal and formal decision making in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Sited in Rocinha, one of Rio's largest and most affluent favelas, this proposal utilizes fieldwork and anlaytical research to demonstrate the integral role the informal sector plays in the city. Conceived of as a "machine", it generates ground-breaking and innovative approaches to the informal sector in the global economy, forcing a dialog about its implementation and the future of the informal sector. Research, fieldwork and proposal together provide critical understandings that add to the repository of architectural and urban knowledge. |
