Jury Comments:
Elegant, smart PLAN, light and delightful. This rebuilding, over the remaining slab of 2 burnt down houses on a Pasadena Glen, is really fresh and open, evoking, in a new way, the simple, connected attitude of the Case Study Houses.

Images Description Credits
Fire destroyed the two previous houses at this site in Pasadena Glen. Reusing the surviving foundation ensured the project's feasibility and served as a reminder of site's dangers. This surprisingly economical design responds to its hazardous setting with sprinklers, fire-resistant materials, and attitude.

The project developed rationally in response to the needs and desires of the owners. This included placing the glassy main living spaces on the 2nd floor to take advantage of views.

The house is assembled from three components to reduce its apparent bulk, and to create a dynamic relationship with the landscape.  A stucco Base rises from the foundation.  A composition of wood floors and white walls forms the modernist Guts within.  Wrapping the outside, a fiber-cement Hood provides fire protection and visual articulation.
