Jury Comments:
What an enlightened City and capable architect. There is a lightness of touch and a wonderful believability about this project. It honors the genius loci with fresh eyes and fresh ideas. We can't wait to see it implemented.
Moorpark City Center
Images Description Credits
The City of Moorpark has seen a significant increase in growth. The City’s leadership has spearheaded a rejuvenation of the Urban Design guidelines, specifically the development of the city’s main street known as “High Street”. High Street was once an active City Center surrounded by an agricultural community. As the agricultural community began to die so did the city center, however, it’s memory remains with mature trees, sheds, grain silo, the old church and the train stop. High street which runs from East to West along the base of the Moorpark mountain range is currently dotted with buildings, parking lots and undeveloped land along its several block length.
Significant buildings such as the City Hall and Library where eventually added to the High Street area, but remain disconnected from High Street. The old Church is hidden by residential development. Historical buildings such as the grain silo and shed are abandoned and isolated by fences. The train stop is accessed through the parking lot and lack of shelter for the waiting passenger. And, the entrance into High Street from the main highway is unannounced and becomes a speed trap for the highway patrol.
