This year’s Design Awards event on Thursday, September 27 at 6:00 pm offers guests one of the most exciting evenings in the Chapter’s history.
The Venue: Pasadena’s historic Castle Green was built in 1898 as the annex for the famous Hotel Green; it is an imposing seven story Moorish Colonial and Spanish style building sitting next to Central Park in Old Pasadena at Raymond and Green Street. http://www.castlegreen.com/history.html
Architect Frederick I. Roehrig drew on Moorish, Spanish, Victorian, and other stylistic elements to produce Pasadena's most stunningly original building. He blended domes, arches, pillars, balconies, and verandahs in a building of structural steel with brick walls and concrete floors, making it Pasadena's first fireproof building. He tied it to the first part of the hotel complex, built on the east side of the street, by an ornate enclosed bridge crossing Raymond Avenue. When the Annex opened for business, its two cylindrical towers on the south and much of the roof line were illuminated with exterior lights.
The Menu: The Castle Green’s interiors breathe the charm of an earlier more leisurely era. The inside public rooms have been restored to much of the look of 1898. Several of the sitting rooms contain their original furniture and beautiful fireplaces.
The warm and inviting sunroom filled with historic wicker and plants, and the grand lobby with its mosaic tile floor and marble stairway will be the location of the cocktails and hors d’oeuvres portion of the evening. Members and their guests will be served such delectables as cold jumbo shrimp served with spicy cocktail sauce, hot quesadillas with wild mushrooms & cheese, hot proscuitto, grilled eggplant, and sage Maui onions.
On into the Palm Terrace Ballroom for dinner and the Design Awards program. Dinner fare includes Spring Mix with Raspberry Vinaigrette Dressing, Caramelized Pecans and Feta Cheese Citrus Salad with Spring Mix, Mandarin Oranges, Grapefruit, and Caramelized Walnuts & Citrus Dressing. Two food buffet stations will be offering Tri-Tip & Turkey with Dinner Rolls and Penne with Marinara Sauce, Pesto or Alfredo Sauce Seasonal Vegetables and Caesar Salad.
The Program: Moderated by 2007 Design Awards Chairman, Kevin O’Brien AIA, the judge’s choices of work that exemplifies outstanding design excellence and innovation will be recognized and projected onto a large screen. Juror’s comments on the winning projects as well an insights on the process will be related to the audience. Additionally, Recognition Awards will be presented in three categories this year. These Awards will recognize practitioners whose works and accomplishments demonstrate exceptional service to the architectural community.
