While the original architectural vision of this landmark museum remains strong, the needs of the museum have changed over the years since it first opened in 1969.  This renovation and expansion project addresses the needs of the museum with new lightweight steel elements that clearly differentiate from the existing concrete historic structure.  A new stainless steel entry canopy extends out to Oak Street making the main entrance more apparent and inviting.  Together with the new sky-lit canopies at the central stairway, covered circulation is now provided throughout the museum to further interconnect the galleries and visitor experience.  The project renovates 94,000 SF gallery space. Another 5,200 SF of new gallery space is created with lightweight steel enclosures and clerestory glazing.  Other improvements include new ticketing positions at each level, an expanded museum store, upgrades to the restaurant to accommodate a new cafĂ©, and a renovated 280 seat auditorium.
