The Treasure Island plan regenerates the social, economic, and natural environment of a defunct naval base in the San Francisco Bay through urban design, architecture, and landscape architecture. The plan is based on walkable urbanism with 100 percent of the Treasure Island population within a 15-minute walk to the transit hub and town center. The dense land-use pattern reduces auto trips and preserves land for open space, natural habitats, and wetlands for onsite treatment of 100 percent of storm water. Treasure Island will harvest 50 percent of all energy from renewable sources, will divert 75 percent of solid waste from landfills, and will recycle 25 percent of wastewater for irrigation and other appropriate uses. The project will foster the development of a diverse, self-sufficient community by offering a range of housing types and economic opportunities for local residents and businesses.
