Resilient Roots (# 239) |
|
|
Allensworth, California’s first Black-founded town, symbolizes resilience and empowerment. The Resilient Roots project, a community hub and cultural resource, transforms Allensworth’s historical adversities into assets by prioritizing resilience and decarbonization. A marketplace offers produce sourced onsite. Elevated walkways encourage activity, and native plants filter air pollutants and stabilize soil. Rammed earth walls define communal spaces, provide thermal comfort, and shade the playground and outdoor gym. The student housing uses local materials and integrates native plants. Each unit is designed for accessibility and off-grid living, featuring translucent roof panels for maximum daylight and airflow. The units double as community shelters during crises, equipped with solar-supported water heaters and adjustable louvers for passive ventilation. Resilient Roots revitalizes Allensworth and the local community while fostering wellness and empowering farmers. |
