Mt. Baldy Retreat
(# 31)
Images Description Credits
Mt. Baldy House is a 550 sq ft vacation residence for a Japenese film maker.

The site is on a steep hillside with an unbuildable creek area that crosses roughly through the middle. The buildable area is 24’ x 48’ and the maximum square footage for the house is 600 sq. ft.

The studio course was combined with two other courses of structures and building construction/mateirals.  Therefore, the design had to be resolved with structural calculations as well as through a psuedo construction document set and a 1”=1’-0” scale model built as closely to a real structure as excrutiatingly possible. For example all concrete was formed, reinforced and poured in place and all wood was milled to represent and match dimensions and amounts of all the calculated structural members.

The faculty insisted on simple and extremely well resolved designs. In fact they encouraged a “well resolved box” a number of times. My approach was to do exactly that, except I took the box and kicked it down the hill.
