McElroy Residence (# 378) |
The design of this 7,500 square foot house responds to two contingencies of its site: panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and an 11-ft. height limit. The clients, a retired couple with two grown children, wanted a gracious contemporary compound for indoor-outdoor living and entertaining.
The house is strongly horizontal, a flowing series of rectilinear volumes composed underneath a flat, floating roof with giant overhangs. Massive sliding glass doors frame views, or pocket completely away to dissolve the boundaries between exterior and interior. With the garage, gym and mechanical spaces tucked underground, the ground plane is freed up for living and every room enjoys an ocean view.
The pale palette of materials, including marble floors that extend outdoors, cleft limestone and trowelled stucco, enhance the house's clean lines and grand scale. The pool pavilion with limestone fireplace functions as an al fresco living room for taking in the stars at night.
