| The challenge was to accommodate the project’s extensive program on a long and narrow site while addressing its poor solar orientation and urban edge condition.
The solution delineates a new campus edge to the community, establishes a terminus of the campus pedestrian axis, and responds to orientation. The east façade’s “human billboard” reveals the activities within to the community. The program includes basketball courts, multi-activity court, rock wall, running track, racquetball court, fitness areas, multi-purpose studios and an aquatic center. The use of a repetitive module enhances the building’s performance by integrating structural, mechanical, and electrical solutions. Sustainable features include: displacement ventilation, natural daylighting with controls, solar control strategies and an efficient HVAC system. The building is 28.6% better than Title-24 and received LEED Gold certification in 2012.
