Arroyo Viejo Child Development Center
(# 371)
Images Description Credits
Built in 1964 and located in East Oakland, the existing Arroyo Viejo Child Development Center had outgrown its useful life. The project consists of gutting and renovating a public daycare in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood. While the design prompt was to freshen up the existing building and meet current licensing requirements, we were able to undertake a dramatic renovation within the same budget that accomplishes multiple sustainable goals.

Keeping most of the structure intact, the design transforms the building to connect with the environment, rethink operations, and create an engaging space for children. The primary success of the project comes from upgrading the rundown facility into a series of light-filled learning spaces.  This renovation renewed an aging structure to become a source of pride for a struggling community with the hope of influencing future community development in the area.
