In light of the perceived plight of the role of the traditional library in a community, the Library of the Future competition asked designers and thinkers to address what a Library of the future would be. The proposed solution asserts that while some traditional roles of a library are still relevant today, the library of the future must be able to continuously adapt to new and unforeseen community needs. Beyond being able to be used for traditional programs like study spaces, physical library stacks, etc. the proposed library can be reconfigured for an innumerable number of programs, art galleries, film screenings, craft workshops and other needs that have yet to emerge. New technologies will be developed and the community will have new requirements for its library. In order to “future-proof” the library and avoid costly changes and renovations in the future, the library is designed to be easily updated, and its various components and technologies modified.
