Situated among aging academic buildings and bordering a residential neighborhood, the Irvine Valley College Life Sciences building reflects the ideals of accessible education. The incorporated design elements result in a space that facilitates scientific discoveries and social encounters.
The vision and design goals were derived from a desire to encourage interaction while creating a flexible, pragmatic educational space. Furthermore, the building is an iconic piece of the campus fabric and surrounding community, setting a precedent for future sustainable practice.
A holistic design approach optimizes lab efficiency while keeping necessary program adjacencies and maximizing campus open space. The harmonious transition between indoors and outdoors fortifies a space for synergy among students and nature.
Designed to LEED Gold standards, extensive sustainable strategies include daylight harvesting, green material selection, meticulous landscape design and the use of reclaimed water. |
