Specific Use of Building Custom Home
Project Location Newport Beach
This interpretation of a modern, artistically sculptured beach house was achieved by the combination of complementary proportions and strong composition represented through a perception of organic forms. As this home is only 24’ wide, these forms were carefully designed to maximize views towards the ocean from almost every space of this challenging narrow lot.

Three exterior materials suitable to the ocean environment were carefully selected to achieve an elegant appearance. These included a vertical dry stacked ledge stone, 24x24 smooth vein golden Bombay stone, and a modeled colored plaster. These materials were also integrated into the interiors of the home reinforcing a collective indoor outdoor appearance.

The home consists of four levels.  A subterranean level includes a lounge/theatre room, guest suite and utility/storage room. The main level functions as the Great room/kitchen/dining area with a wall of vanishing pocket doors opening towards the beach. The upper level of three distinct bedroom suites designed for maximum privacy and ocean views. The sky lounge (the fourth level) connects to a large viewing deck complete with fireplace and a spectacular cantilevered Jacuzzi/spa, allowing for the ultimate views.

The client wished to maximize the square footage to this lot and with the regulations on lot coverage, the only way to achieve additional square footage was to build below grade. As such, the construction of this home was no simple task. The subterranean finished floor is five feet below sea level encased in a two-foot wall of concrete.  Due to the restrictions on home height, floor to ceiling dimensions were at a premium, creating careful considerations for structural engineering and venting of heating and cooling systems.

Overall, the inspiration of this home is based on its relationship to the beach and views of the ocean, and was guided by the client’s program requirements and the architect’s vision to design a sculptured sand castle of a jewel box.
