Project Location Panjin, China
Located in the heart of the commercial district in downtown Panjin, China, the 600,000 square meter Suning Plaza features: indoor shopping center; outdoor shopping street; 260 meter tall office and hotel tower; six 100-150 meter residential towers; restaurants; performance area, family entertainment; and an ice rink. Suning Plaza aims to become the icon of the city and an example of well-rounded placemaking that benefits the community while reflecting the surrounding natural environment.

Inspired by the rivers, grassy wetlands, and native crane of Panjin’s landscape, soft curves are reflected throughout the project’s building forms and circulation patterns. The metaphor: the tower is the long-necked crane, and its grassy wetland habitat is represented by the six-story retail podium, the residential towers, and plaza. The exterior takes the shape of water pouring down from the sky onto the high rise tower, then flowing down and over the entire project.

The design team’s suggestion to add placemaking elements such as the outdoor skating rink, open air shopping street area, and rooftop “All Season Garden” and family entertainment features were outside of the developer’s original scope, yet were accepted because these public amenities will attract consumers and support the community lifestyle. The solution also instilled confidence on the government’s part, resulting in approval granted sooner and with greater ease. At the groundbreaking, the mayor of Panjin publicly praised the design team for creating a high quality landmark for the city.

The integration of uses makes this project greater than the sum of its parts. Fluid circulation patterns mesh seamlessly with the surrounding commercial and residential districts. The mall concourse guides visitors from the busy commercial street corners through the lush gardens of the shopping center and into the tranquil residential zone without disrupting the continuity of the project or the neighborhood.
