This utilitarian building is notable in how it dialogues architecturally with an existing departmental building and how it aggressively incorporates many sustainable measures.  While highly contemporary in its aesthetic, the massing and vertical rhythms echo the existing 1930’s building.  The orthogonal form of the building displays different layers of visual depth by degrees of transparency of the exterior skin. The balance of opacity and transparency responds to the sun and the views offered.  Abundant at the north brings glare-free daylighting deep into the building. This combines with a highly energy-sensitive glazing approach on other facades, where windows are screened by perforated panels collaged in subtle patterns of color. Additional daylighting is brought into the space by an array of sky-light tubes. Through the implementation of these strategies supported by efficient mechanical and electrical systems, including a photovoltaic array, the project team intends to garner a LEED Gold rating.
