Located in the Central Valley, Modesto Junior College’s 19,650 sf Student Services Building consolidates programs spread throughout campus into a one-stop-shop while allowing for departmental growth. Programs include admissions, records, evaluations, counseling, veterans & disabled student assistance, testing labs, and multi-purpose classroom. The 2-story U-shaped building frames a central lobby and a celebratory canopy captures 6,500 sf of exterior space, protecting students from the sun and ushering them into the double-height lobby.
Nestled tightly within an old-growth grove at campus entry, the building’s bar elements open slightly to embrace student pedestrian traffic from the central quad. The custom-perforated aluminum canopy panels create a dappled light effect simulating that of the existing trees and the subtle metal cladding pattern abstracts the region's patchwork quilt of farmlands. Redwood harvested onsite warmly clads columns, beams, and the acoustical wall assembly.
