The School District’s requirement for educational amenities equity across the District’s elementary schools was both the opportunity and constraint on this small site. By removing an obsolete 1,400 SF building a site was created for a new 7,350 SF Student Services building housing Library, Media Center, Student Support and Staff Support meeting the amenity requirements.
The new structure is an expression of program, site constraints and a desire to unify old and new with one powerful move. The roof form cantilevers beyond its supports creating entry porch, reading terrace and covered walkway. The roof tilts upward creating a higher volume for the Media Center providing an overhang, shading the glazing. The roof’s easterly lower scale creates a single supervision point for both the park and the school lunch area. The new structure has transformed this neglected site into a community beacon demonstrating the powerful impact of local school bonds.
