ArtCenter Peter and Merle Mullin Gallery
(# 725)

Images Description Credits
This renovation project, on the ground floor of a mid-rise, at the end of a historic freeway is designed to function as a gallery, a signifier for a school of art and design, and a cultural destination in the city. The 6,300 square foot space is programmed to function as an automotive gallery. Inside the gallery the automobile is treated as an object of art. In the context around the gallery the automobile is treated as an instrument for viewing art. In the design, the turning path of an automobile runs through the interior spaces, and out of the building envelope to the exterior. These auto pathways form the curving walls that organize the interior gallery, the exterior courtyard, the lenticular ‘fin wall’ and the parking and garden areas beyond.  The presence and image of this gallery on the street, at this historic nexus in the city, and the gesture of the ‘fin wall’, signifies the presence of the school in the urban and cultural landscape of the city.
