Rocketship Delta Prep is one of California’s only charter schools built to be Net Zero Energy. The two-story building is located on an urban-infill site with the back and side areas open for play equipment, a lunch shelter, soccer field, basketball court, learning garden boxes, and tree grove. The site/landscape design strategies center around bioswales of native species to treat stormwater runoff while landscaping urban sidewalks. The design draws from early Californian history, with a modern architectural interpretation of Spanish mission elements. Historical influences are evident in details, colors, and finishes from the arches in the perforated metal solar screen, to the wood-clad balcony projections and the highlights of color on structural expressions.
The project also demonstrates the importance of designing and building flexible and high-performing schools, all while conserving resources, pushing toward a greener economy, and educating stewards of our environment. |
