Watson Replacement Project
(# 770)

Images Description Credits
This proposal is located in the center of a well-known technological institute. The program includes approximately 143,000 SF of science and engineering labs, offices, conference rooms, lounges, and teaching spaces on five floors - two below grade and three above.

To encourage the interactivity required for groundbreaking research today, a skylit atrium, augmented by abundant interior transparency, visually connects the users and activities on all five floors of the building.

The building’s primary cladding system is composed of office-sized glass panels with colored ceramic frits. On one side of each panel is a vertical band of white circles, while along the bottom is a colored horizontal band that hides the furniture often seen in floor-to-ceiling glazing. Across the building’s two main facades, the colors change according to the rainbow’s R-O-Y-G-B-I-V pattern, which alludes to the fact that so much of the facility’s research involves the study and manipulation of light.
