Context
The existing house is located across the street from Johnson Lake in the lower Arroyo Seco in Pasadena. The neighborhood has numerous mid-century houses and the area is very natural and densely covered with mature growth trees. The existing house was a 1955 post and beam structure with a garage that had a 6’-6” high ceiling and a small 1960’s kitchen buried in the middle of the house.
Program / Scope
The client wanted to expand the house to create a new family gathering area including a new kitchen and lounge and enlarge the existing garage. This office provided complete design and construction observation services.
Size & Cost
The new pavilion addition has 537 square feet of habitable space and the interior renovation is 300 square feet. The garage renovation is 360 square feet. The total construction cost was ±$388,000.
Design Solution
The new addition was expanded towards the street exposure connecting it to the existing garage which was demolished and rebuilt with a higher ceiling to allow car access. The existing house accesses the new addition by creating an exotic wood portal (storage spaces) into the kitchen. The new addition includes the kitchen with casual dining and fire place lounge area.
The addition was designed as a post and beam elevated pavilion with all glass walls and sliding glass doors opening up to the decks and yard and the new garage with garden roof.
The kitchen/casual dining and fireplace lounge are separated by a sliding glass pocket door and bifold doors allowing either side to be opened up to the exterior or both. The new pavilion has a panoramic view of the garden and back towards the original house which has been restored. This new space feels like it is hovering over the yard. The old kitchen was redesigned into a dining room with wine storage.
The new post and beam glass pavilion complements the existing slab wall post and beam house graciously while extending the life of the old structure and not overpowering it.
