| The original design by Frank Gehry has a reflection pool as one of its main elements, but due to the difficulty to maintain, it is not available anymore, and the librarian there want to have more space to let visitor hang out and spend time in the library. Therefore we provide and expansion design for this library.
Every elements we use in this design are relate to "Circle" in contrast to Frank Gehry's "Box Design". Also we find the intersection for Sphere and plane surface is fascinating, so we arrange it in a way that showcase this element, and use it as an opportunity to make opening and circulations.
The sphere we use to construct this design is place in a very logical way in order to minimize the difficulty of construction, as some one might bring up the complexity of building this in reality. because of the placement of the spheres, all the structure member can be create in a modular way and assemble in specific angle, and there are primary structure ribs that can run thought multiple sphere to guide the assembly and strengthen the structure. The polar structure grids is demonstrated in plans.
The connection in-between spheres can serve multiple purpose, it can be use as circulations or mechanical space for AC and water collection systems(Show in wall sections).
The structure are design in a way to carry multiple loads, for example the ramp that is going around is a very subtle spiral ramp that evolve around the spheres and also create platform along its way to have people enjoy the open space it create.
The programs are differentiate into three category; Open, semi-open, closed. and the space are located either inside a sphere, outside a sphere, or on a ramp that is in-between. With the form of this design, there are many opportunity to blurry the boundary of indoor and outdoor space, so that they can be truly mixing together.
The original design is focus on East and North side, but the west and south side are being ignore with blank walls. while in this design all four side have different purpose. East and North side are cover by Cable net glass panels, so it can have a pretty show case to the outside and gathering a lot of sunlight without heating up inside too much, the south side is still blocking most sunlight and carrying many loads. the west side is turn into an vertical garden with vines climbs on cable nets, and creating a shade with some light penetrate through.
