The architectural proposal enacts an anticipatory approach to the development of National Park infrastructure in Sand to Snow National Monument. Located within Riverside County, the new Interpretive Center accommodates both the increased demand of Whitewater Preserve as well as the evolution of preservation and educational programs.
Organized into three distinct zones, the architectural demarcations operate within the duality of both “scope” and “scape,” affording oscillating experiences of elevated vistas complemented by enhanced moments of introspection. As both a retreat for hikers traveling along the Pacific Crest Trail and gateway for the local community, the design functions to produce two forms of relationships—human-to-nature as well as human to human. While augmenting Southern California’s unique biodiversity and geological marvels, the landmark creates a discovery haven that integrates, ignites, and reinvigorates human affinity for the natural environment. |
