Specific Use of Building Library
Project Location Hollywood, CA
Interactive Library is located in Hollywood, CA, right off the sunset strip. The site is the old Hollywood Library by Architect Frank Gehry. The objective was to take the existing Hollywood Library and re-imagine an update that would revitalize the library on an urban, street level. Most of the regular walking pedestrians fail to recognize the building as a public library because of its fortified demeanor on both the front entrance side and the back alley side. The scope of work included a new design that de-fortifies the block wall, adding 20,000 SF to the existing 20,000 SF, keeping the existing Frank Gehry building, and extending the entry level to open from the alley side with the hope to break the standard alley facade we see throughout LA's urban alleyways. The final design solution was to introduce kinetic architectural features inside and out with the hopes to create interactions between the public and the building.  If the whole building facade is covered with sliding panels, it would be pretty hard to not notice this building.
