Specific Use of Building Health and Wellness
Project Location Chino Grand, California
Completed in June 2017, the Kaiser Permanente Chino Grand Campus is the first ground-up Next Generation Medical Office to realize the organization’s Life Integration principles. The translation of these principles creates an aspirational health campus where next-generation concepts—from initial check-in to the way medical providers collaborate—emphasize health. The campus feels more like a celebratory community center than a traditional medical office building. Key functional elements are pulled out of the main building to frame a landscaped heart, an oasis separated from the parking lot that becomes a uniquely welcoming “place.” All indoor and outdoor spaces are welcoming, emphasizing innovative care and offering opportunities for healthy choices that reflect Kaiser Permanente’s Thrive Brand.

The facility provides 57 exam rooms and 42 physician offices. Services include Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Mental Health, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Imaging and a Nurse Treatment Center in the 3-story main building. Two stand-alone buildings house Vision Essentials and a Community Room surrounded by a Main Plaza, a Community Garden, a Contemplative Retreat and a Thrive Walk. The design celebrates Southern California’s indoor/outdoor lifestyle and local artists, including pieces created by children at the Chino Youth Museum.

Visitors enter the campus from many directions; each pathway a unique experience of place and beauty, with quick access to any desired destination. A well-defined “front door” leads to check-in. Entering the campus, members check-in on their smart phone, at a self-serve kiosk or with a greeter who sits down with them in a living room-like setting – more like a hospitality interaction than a doctors’ office. Members enjoy the indoor/outdoor amenities of the Public Square for their short wait. This playful interior space has both views and connections to an equally engaging exterior space. Bright color bands weave from the exterior façades into and through this space to reinforce the indoor/outdoor interplay. Exposed ceilings with creative lighting and acoustical treatments create an informal vibe.

When their provider is ready to see them, members head up the Thrive Stairs to the Front Porch, where they’re greeted before heading into the day-lit Clinic Module. Comfortable Exam Rooms are designed to put members at the heart of all activities. Shifting away from the clinical and sterile, they focus on the personal interaction between member and provider. The Provider Enclave is an off-stage refuge for physicians and care team members. Providers have traded traditional offices for smaller, glazed mini-offices for focused work. Open, daylight-filled, collaborative spaces are for peer interaction.

Integrated design thinking shaped the site planning, drought tolerant planting, building orientation, passive solar shading strategies, building systems selection, LED lighting and integration of a 250kW photo-voltaic array. On target to achieve LEED Gold and to exceed baseline Title 24 energy performance by 30%, the $22  million campus demonstrates Kaiser’s commitment to the health of the community and the planet by leading in best care practices that create engaged patients who develop lifelong relationships with their caregivers.
