Specific Use of Building Single-Family Residential
Project Location United States
1.CONTEXT: Southern California foothills

2.PROGRAM/SCOPE: Restore/Renovate existing Jarvis Earl Estate (1927) originally designed by Everett Babcock, Wallace Neff's partner. Original house was built by Jarvis Earl, developer of the new subdivision of Alta Canyada (later renamed La Canada) to serve as a model of what could be built in the neighborhood.  Scope of work included Kitchen/Bathroom remodel; New Family & Media Room Addition; Master Suite, Landscaping & Interiors.  All tile and fountains are new.

3.BUDGET/COST: $600,000

4.SPECIAL CHALLENGES/UNUSUAL CHARACTERISTICS: The most interesting design challenge was to visually re-orient the house to the street.  The original 3-1/2 acre property was subdivided in 1950s into 5 separate lots with 3 houses built in original front yard.  Access to property was now from side yard the house no longer had a street presence.  Redesign of entry sequence & landscaping re-oriented house to street.

5.SOLUTION/DESIGN: Restore house to original condition where possible, renovate as needed, additions to maintain or enhance original level of detail in Spanish Colonial Style.  There is new Spanish Colonial Revival Style detailing with beamed ceilings throughout with extensive use of Tunisian tile, new decorative glass & Spanish Colonial Revival gardens with fountains.
