The Renaissance Block of the Arts project serves a dual purpose—to provide space for instruction and to bring the community downtown to enjoy the arts. Blending these two purposes in an urban environment that linked the four distinct building and project types was the opportunity and challenge for this project. The Center for Social Justice and Civil Liberties (CSJCL), a circa 1920’s two-story building is located on the southwest edge of the Renaissance Block. The four-story Culinary Arts Academy and District Office (CAADO) building sits next to the CSJCL to the south and the two-story Coil School for the Musical Arts (CSMA) and four-story Parking Structure to the north. Each building provides inviting places and venues for students, residents, visitors and patrons. The District’s commitment to arts, culture, history and sustainability will solidify downtown Riverside’s place as an urban center for activity, creativity and lifelong learning.
