Dance Pavilion
The third dimension project is designed for students to develop different abilities to design a three-dimensional form created from an original two dimensional shape design. The project objectives are to create a transition between the world and space, to define an architectural space using a combination of different elements, and to be able to construct models that exhibit a high level of craftsmanship and precision.
My project is to designs an entry and then provide a transitional experience to the major space that involves both time and space. In addition my intent of the project is to design a variety of visual experiences. Depending on the angle and direction you look, it should range from enclosed to more open. The pedestrian pathway is level, no stairs or ramps may be included in the design.
The structure is designed to have major dance area space that may occupy from 25 to 35 percent of the structure. The major dance space cannot be interrupted by positive or negative elements.
The design of this pathway has to be composed with lineal elements, planar elements, and volumes. The student is to select and design the sizes and shapes of these elements, the size of the positive elements can be from 2’ to 24’, and the negative elements from -4 to -2. The lineal elements “columns” are generated only from intersections of two or more lines. The planar elements “walls” are extruded from a single line. The volumes “spaces” are positive and negatives shapes are defined by some combination of lines; straight and curved that encloses an area.
I successfully transformed a two-dimensional shape design into a three dimensional concept model of a dance pavilion. My concept was to design a dance pavilion where the community could spend quality time with their families. The dance pavilion will be located at the center of the structure and there is only one way to go in and out. Around the pavilion the structure will have a variety of special experiences, where people may choose to sit and enjoy. My pedestrian pathway presents variations of positive and negative elements guiding the people to the dance pavilion and at the same time providing a different visual experience and a rich variety of view angles. The overhead planes will help the pavilion have shade, however some open spaces will let the people enjoy the weather and cool summer evenings. |
