Context

The original campus planning began in the early 1950s on the Odell Ranch in the Coachella Valley and John Carl Warnecke was the design architect. During his initial visit to the site, Warnecke observed the long rows of date palms and the covered corridors that they formed. The palms inspired arcades with their tapered columns supporting the arched covered walks found throughout the campus.

Program and Scope

The Athletics Facilities include renovation of existing shower and locker rooms into state-of-the-art health and fitness facility, construction of a new 35,000 SF competition gymnasium and a new tennis complex. The competition gymnasium includes three recreational cross courts, bleachers, concessions and locker rooms. The lockers rooms provide separate student and team rooms to equally meet the needs of the academic and athletic programs. The existing Shower/Locker Building was remodeled to house the new fitness facility, with a weight room and rooms for aerobics, spinning, and dance.

Design Solution

The 70,000 SF LEED NC Gold project's mission was to upgrade the Athletics Facilities into an exciting, sustainable place to see and be seen where students can work out, hang out and relax. The competition gymnasium includes a two-story north facing atrium fronting a new athletics sustainable courtyard. The atrium concrete structure matches the 15-foot grid found throughout the campus and turns down at the west protecting the atrium glazing. The east elevation of the Gymnasium has a custom perforated façade that aligns with the existing arcade announcing the athletic complex to the campus while serving a practical function; providing privacy and solar control into the space. At night, the back lit screen is a much needed way-finding element on campus. The large signage directs students and visitors alike to the locker rooms, showers and restrooms even from the athletics fields.

Sustainability

The HVAC system provides direct space conditioning of the gymnasium while allowing return and relief air to indirectly condition and maintain building temperatures in the adjacent support spaces. Occupant comfort in the lobby is enhanced by four efficient circulating fans mounted from the ceiling. The high-efficiency envelope, cool roof, insulated precast panels, innovative HVAC systems, 100% naturally daylighting for gymnasium and efficient lighting with controls create a building that exceed Title-24 standards by 28%. Sustainable features include:

  • LEED NC Gold certification achieved in June 2015

  • Project exceeds T-24 by 28%

  • 172 kw Photovoltaic system meets 30% of energy use

  • 100% of storm water treated
  • Water efficient landscaping with drought tolerance & native plant materials

  • Water efficient plumbing fixtures beat benchmark by 21%

  • 100% naturally daylighting gymnasium with lighting controls

  • Construction waste management procedures are specified

  • Specification of recycled content and locally produced materials

  • Specification of FSC certified wood products

  • Best practices for ventilation rate design, control, and monitoring

  • Construction indoor air quality management procedures are specified
