The purpose of this project was to take a two-dimensional design and generate a three-dimensional design and explore the variety of possibilities from my original two-dimensional design.
Intent:
I intended to accomplish a functional transition from outside space to an entry point with a transitional sequence to the major space.
• Design an entry that provides a transitional experience between the world and the major space that involves both time and space (create a mysterious entry).
• Create a major space that is partly or completely hidden from view as you approach and enter the structure. The understanding of the major space should unveil itself over time.
• The visual experience in the major space should range depending on the direction you look. It should range from enclosed to more open; from more explicit/closed to implicit/open. Solid walls verses columns.
• The major space should have a clearly identifiable focal figure shape such as a rectangle, square, or triangle that is delineated by its defining elements. The final design of the major space is a triangle.
Process:
1. Out of 100 shape designs, created on yellow trace paper, I selected the best four I felt would satisfy the project design goals and intent.
2. From the selected four, I identified major pathways and spaces for each.
3. After contemplation, evaluation and review of the four options, I decided to work with Design # 4.
4. From there, I redrew my selected shape design at a 6” by 6” and matched the scale of the design to a 48 foot square at a scale of 1/8” = 1’- 0”.
5. I cut the major pieces of the shape out of heavy weight paper and began the placement process. To create a mysterious entry, I decided to move the pieces, from the entry point and along the pathway, to increase gradually like a staircase moving upwards towards the major space entry.
