The project is part of a larger vision to revitalize downtown Riverside with art and education programs from the local Community College. The 3-story, 60,000 SF building houses the Culinary Arts Academy and District Offices. The façade ties the new building to the historic Center for Social Justice and Civil Liberties anchors the entire block with an urban-scale solar canopy. The canopy shades the east façade and roof deck while announcing the building’s public uses to the community. The project received a LEED NC Silver rating in 2017 and given the program and the prominent site the Architect wanted the project to “wear” its sustainability. The two-facades that address the street use a variety of louvres, solar canopy, spandrel glass and fritted glass to protect the building’s openings that maximizes the harvesting of natural light while presenting the facility’s unique program to students and the community.
