Santiago Adobe is located in the unincorporated community of Landers, also known as Homestead Valley, in the High Desert region of the Mojave Desert, California. Recalling the Small Tract Act of 1938, the mid-twentieth-century land scheme that allowed individuals to gain the title to a parcel of land by simply building and occupying a home on it. The client purchased a 10-acre lot to build his own tiny home upon, using his own hands and the ground beneath him.
Adobe is an affordable, accessible, and sustainable building material and has long-standing roots in California and across the globe. It is essential for all future builds, but particularly those located in the desert, to address the issues brought about by imminent climate change. Through its small scale and smaller footprint, the Santiago Adobe uses fewer construction materials, requires less energy to heat and cool, and aims to be the future model for desert living. |
