Sustainable design means establishing a dialogue where the building must answer to the fickle behavior of its surroundings. Form in this scheme responds heavily to the environment allowing for a more harmonious harnessing of the natural. The building is organized into four distinct rectangular modules with three of those lying on the ground floor. Both the living room module and the garage module are adjacent to the street, reflecting their role as the initial welcoming space. The bedroom module which has a role opposite of the living room and garage is hidden from exposure to the street and nestled in the greenery of the backyard. The communal role of the dining room is made central on the building’s second floor. In lifting the central module, each of the four modules are open to natural light and ventilation on all sides. By allowing for this all-encompassing connection to occur within each module, overall footprint is reduced and an indoor to outdoor connection is streamlined.
