Situated on a northwest facing, sloping desert site, Thunderbird Cuatro was conceived to challenge the assumption that convenient street access should dictate building orientation. Instead, the design prioritizes energy performance and passive solar strategy. The home is positioned for optimal southern solar exposure, while a long carriage style drive leads to a rear loaded garage, freeing the architecture from the visual weight of front facing vehicular massing. This allows the residence to read as a low, disciplined composition that balances privacy, openness, and a strong connection to the landscape.
Arrival is carefully choreographed by a series of concrete steps descending alongside a burnished CMU wall, guiding visitors from the public street toward a sheltered entry courtyard. Here, desert landscaping softens the geometry and reinforces a sense of enclosure before entry. This sequence establishes a gradual shift from exposure to privacy, a recurring theme throughout the home. |
