San Bernardino faces one of California’s highest rates of homelessness, driven by a shortage of affordable housing, economic instability, and limited access to supportive services. Developed through a partnership between Lutheran Social Services of Southern California, the City of San Bernardino, and San Bernardino County, the Community Wellness Center (SBCWC) was created through California’s BHCIP Homekey Round 2 program to address this urgent need.
The SBCWC provides emergency shelter for up to 75 men and 140 private modular housing units designed to support stability, dignity, and long-term success. Thoughtfully planned communal spaces—including a courtyard, cafeteria, drop-in center, computer room, and classroom—promote connection, skill-building, and personal growth. Together with accessible onsite support services, the project creates a safe, trauma-informed environment that empowers residents to transition from homelessness to permanent housing. |
