The James L. Cox Public Library transforms a former golf course clubhouse into Victorville’s new main library—a vibrant destination for learning, creativity, and community connection. Rooted in adaptive reuse and placemaking, the design preserves the building’s defining character, including expansive glass, broad overhangs, exposed wood ceilings, and a sculptural fireplace, while introducing contemporary spaces tailored to a growing and diverse population.
Organized around a central reading room, the library includes an immersive children’s library, teen and maker spaces, study rooms, lounges, and outdoor courtyards that support a variety of learning experiences. A tree-inspired reading feature, life-size animal graphics, colorful portals, desert landscaping, decorative screening, and shaded outdoor gathering areas create a welcoming environment that extends beyond the building and reinforces the library’s role as a community hub. |
