Named after the ancestral Agua Caliente stone flume it deferentially hovers over, Flume is a masterclass in structural levitation, material innovation, and spatial discipline. Designed for the rugged terrain of Desert Palisades, this fully permitted, unbuilt 1,756-square-foot residence rejects typical desert sprawl, anchoring to the earth at just two points via monolithic CMU masses that cantilever heavy steel beams across a historic easement. Flumeās primary design merit lies in its brilliant reconciliation of rigid engineering and poetic materiality. Standard burnished blocks are sliced and rotated 90 degrees to create a deeply textured, shadow-casting sculptural relief, while a ribbed stainless steel kitchen island acts as a kinetic canvas reflecting the desert sky. Complete with a suspended Japanese Furo bath beneath a James Turrell-inspired solar aperture, Flume pairs structural heroism with an intimate, ever-evolving interior sanctuary. |
