Composition 59 is a vibrant rejuvenation of a 1959 mid-century modern gem in the Coachella Valley, originally built by the legendary partnership of MarVal Construction (Bob Marx and Val Powelson). Rather than diluting the home’s signature diagonal orientation and opinionated stance with a conventional attached addition, the design team reinterpreted the site as a dynamic Suprematist layout akin to a Kazimir Malevich painting. The project restores the primary structure while introducing a 680-square-foot freestanding studio and a 500-square-foot covered pool pavilion, utilizing the angles and rhythms of Powelson's original "spider-leg" columns to dictate the new geometry. Inside, the design acts as the ultimate antidote to the sterile, white-walled museum trend, deploying a bold, playful use of color and texture. Composition 59 honors its historic pedigree not by freezing it in time, but by keeping its defiant, joyful soul vibrantly alive. |
