Sunnylands Engineered Wetlands
(# 231)
Images Description Credits
The Engineered Wetlands Building at Sunnylands is the final crowning environmental achievement and architectural addition to the previously completed LEED Platinum Administration Campus. The 872 square foot engineered wetland, completed and becoming operational in 2023, is located adjacent to the existing Sunnylands Center & Gardens and historic estate for Walter and Leonore Annenberg. The Wetlands is a living laboratory and treatment system that converts black wastewater into grey water, usable for flushing toilets and irrigation. The wetland building is a concrete block and steel “greenhouse” with a deeply shaded south facing window wall and north clearstory window ribbon. Unlike a real grassy wetland, the engineered wetland building contains 3 large, elevated pools of native plants that leverage natural biologic water filtration. Visitors can observe the workings of this closed-loop system that now allows the campus to use only as much water as falls naturally on the site annually.
