Established in 1965, John W. North High School has long served as a cornerstone of the Riverside community. As educational needs evolved, the aging campus required modernization to support contemporary learning while preserving the traditions and identity valued by generations of students, staff, and alumni. Through a two-year planning process led by Riverside Unified School District’s Visioning Design Committee and the design team, stakeholders collaborated to identify priorities that would strengthen academics, student life, and community engagement.
A comprehensive assessment of campus facilities identified the construction of a new competition gymnasium and a two-story science building addition as the most impactful investments. The project revitalized the 43-acre campus by replacing aging portable classrooms with permanent instructional facilities and modernizing existing buildings. New science classrooms provide dedicated laboratory environments that support inquiry, experimentation, and project-based learning, while flexible layouts and upgraded technology accommodate diverse teaching methods. The competition gymnasium enhances athletic programs and serves as a venue for school and community events. The site planning of the building additions was used to enhance the main entry points to campus for students and visitors.
The project was delivered within budget through careful planning, value-conscious decision-making, and close collaboration among District leadership, the design team, and construction management team. Strategic planning also helped secure additional funding, maximizing the project’s long-term value and community benefit.
Construction required careful phasing to maintain uninterrupted school operations on an active campus. The project also included significant upgrades to site accessibility, campus life-safety systems, site utilities, and code compliance. Balancing modernization with preservation of the school’s established character required ongoing stakeholder engagement and thoughtful integration of new facilities within the existing campus.
The design creates a cohesive and welcoming campus through clear circulation paths, enhanced campus entrances at both “front” and “back” entries to the school, outdoor gathering areas, and expanded learning terraces. New playfields and landscaped spaces strengthen connections between the school and surrounding neighborhood while supporting student wellness, collaboration, and social interaction. The modernization reinforces the school’s role as a civic landmark, providing inclusive spaces that elevate academic, athletic, and extracurricular opportunities while honoring its longstanding legacy.
Sustainability was a key project objective. High-efficiency lighting, HVAC, and plumbing systems reduce energy and water consumption, while the campus is designed to accommodate future solar photovoltaic installations in compliance with California Title 24 standards. Architectural shading, drought-tolerant landscaping, low-VOC materials, and recycled-content products contribute to healthy, resilient learning environments. Educational sustainability features, including raised garden beds for environmental science programs, promote environmental stewardship and hands-on learning. |
