Project Location Oceanside, California
A New Health and Wellness Hub
This project unifies an interdisciplinary mix of wellness and educational programing in a new campus complex interconnected via courtyards, abundant daylighting, and shared outdoor collaborative space. The client sought a more contemporary architectural approach that at the same time would fit the character of MiraCosta College and perform well for a diverse group of programs under a single new identity.

Setting a New Course
Redeveloping such a large portion of the campus provided the opportunity for a new architectural direction. The facilities support three independent departments in a shared collaborative environment. The architecture needed to be high performing, supportive of human comfort and learning, and intrinsically connected to the outdoors. The result must also strengthen the welcoming character and human scale that define MiraCosta College.

Layered Connections to Shared Spaces
The use of outdoor spaces as the ‘great connector’ between departments and people became a core strategy. Each building is organized around an intimate courtyard that serves as outdoor social space and building entry. All three courtyards connect to a central plaza and event space. Clean contemporary roof lines float above minimalist volumes and help define these outdoor spaces while maintaining sight lines from interior to the outdoors.

The Result: A Seamless Connection Between Strategy and Form
Sustainable building strategies, connectivity, and wellness features are inseparable from the architecture. All three buildings feature abundant natural light, connection to the outdoors, thoughtful shading, efficient layouts, and carefully chosen finishes to maximize occupant wellness and integrate recycled material. The buildings seek to be simple, efficient, and humane in their expression. Each is purpose-built for the unique needs of the programs within, while cohesively interconnected architecturally and by the landscape. Across the entire campus, numerous spaces for gathering, socializing, relaxing, and connecting at various scales reflect the true purpose of this ambitious expansion of the college – to bring people together and foster collaboration across an interdisciplinary blend of health and wellness education opportunities.
