The plan is organized as a series of interlocking volumes that step naturally with the terrain, creating outdoor rooms, shaded terraces, and framed views toward the surrounding ridgelines. Circulation is intuitive and direct, with primary living spaces opening fully to the exterior, while more private functions are strategically buffered along the site edges.
Materiality and spatial composition work together to anchor the project within its desert context while shaping a clear architectural order. Smooth plaster, warm wood accents, expansive glazing, and structural planes of 6-inch-high burnished CMU are deployed as a cohesive palette that balances solidity and openness. The masonry elements provide visual weight, texture, and a sense of permanence, reinforcing the home’s horizontal character, while lighter materials and transparent planes dissolve boundaries between interior and exterior. Used both inside and out, the CMU walls act as spatial organizers—shaping courtyards, framing long views, and mediating transitions between public and private zones. These elements extend beyond enclosed rooms to define outdoor spaces and layered thresholds, allowing the spatial layout to unfold as a sequence of interconnected volumes rather than discrete rooms. The result is a legible, grounded architecture where material variation and spatial flow work in concert to support climate responsiveness and a strong connection to the landscape.
An inverted gable roof, expressed like the hull of a ship, extends deep cantilevers across the main living areas, providing shade and emphasizing the home’s linear organization. Clerestory glazing and carefully modulated openings bring in controlled natural light while maintaining privacy from the street above. The result is a restrained, modern desert home where material clarity and spatial order create a calm, enduring architectural presence. |
